Wings Of Your Own

August 30, 2019

All your travels you would try
To be like the special guy
To sit inside the cockpit zone
But now you have wings of your own

Up and away in the sky
Till the plane could not spy
You travel as the wind has blown
But now you have wings of your own

Your dream was to once more fly
In the plane that often ply
Between near here and far from home
But now you have wings of your own

Now you have the best one could vie
No money or wealth could ever buy
Blessed and secured at the heavenly throne
Because Jesus gave you wings of your own

Fear Not For I Am With You

March 20, 2019

The Old Testament has many wonderful stories that reveal a treasure of God’s truths and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego is one of these.

It is a powerful story about how faith and obedience are central in a believer’s life. And the Bible’s account is significant for two reasons; firstly because it was “multi-miraculous”, if there is such a word, and secondly, because, irregardless of the result, they chose to trust and believe in the Most High God.

The story set in Daniel chapter 3, where the Israelites have been captive in Babylon and the ruler, King Nebuchadnezzar, had passed a law for everyone to worship a great statue of himself, and failure to comply will result being thrown into a furnace of fire.

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to the king’s statue and were brought in for questioning before Nebuchadnezzar, to whom, gave the 3 friends a chance again to bow before the statue.

Faith, faithfulness and fearless

The next part is when the 3 friends replied the king, and is what, I think, is the key moment where faith and faithfulness were expressed in one statement, to the point where they were fearless.

“If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.””

Daniel 3:17-18 ESV

Here are some precious truths which makes this account so remarkable and “multi-miraculous”:

  1. They stood up against falsehood; they said no to the statue and to idolatry. (vs. 12)
  2. They proclaimed their faith in God to save them. (vs. 17)
  3. They chose to worship God alone, no matter the outcome. The result was not important to them, only their obedience to serve God. (vs. 18)
  4. They were tied up and cast or thrown into the furnace; you would be physically hurt in some way if you were bound and thrown but they were not. (vs. 20)
  5. When God leads you through a fire, it’s not to burn you, but your captors and enemies (vs. 22)
  6. God sometimes makes us go through the fire instead of putting it out. And when He does, He appears to everyone in the fire with us. He will be the “fourth man” in the fire with us. (vs. 25).
  7. They were unhurt from the fire and even recorded as without a trace of burn smell. It is amazing that the writer recorded this in order to give us the level of protection these men received. (vs. 27)
  8. Their faithfulness resulted in the King’s change of heart (vs. 28)

If it hasn’t already, this account should revolutionalise your view of God and our trials. God’s plan is sovereign over our wish of how the outcomes should be. Remember Jesus Himself said to the Father, “not my will but yours be done!”

God said, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

Isaiah 43:2 ESV

Notice the Bible doesn’t say if you pass through the waters; it says when you pass through the waters. You will have troubles throughout life but fear not! Jesus will always walk through with you.

Mentoring For Young Adult Leaders

May 7, 2017

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

Psalm 23:1-3 NKJV

The Royal Rangers Leaders Manual says that “friendship is the bedrock of mentoring”.
The stronger our relationships are, the more effective our Royal Rangers ministry can be. Leaders should strive to form strong healthy friendships not just with the kids they minister to but with leaders amongst the ministry.
Why the need for mentoring?
I can see two main uses of mentoring in the life on a young adult who leads as a Royal Ranger leader.
1) Leaders don’t do well in ministry not so much because of the inability to cope with ministry but, rather with life outside of ministry. Out of the 7 days in a week, you will only spend a handful of hours in ministry, but you spend the rest of them dealing with the strains and pressures of life, work, finances, personal problems, difficult relationships, etc… Because Royal Rangers is about shaping future leaders, it is crucial that your life both in and outside church is lived in the right manner.
2) Friendship is not just about fellowship and fun. In order to continue growing strong and mature friendships, there is a need to introduce Godly influence, guidance and instruction, otherwise there is little difference of the relationship you have with non-Christian college buddies and your fellow church leaders.
A mentor, or shepherd as we will see later, helps you to stay within a Godly environment by using his or her example to influence the way you identify weaknesses in your life, in making difficult decision and how you approach and overcome problems.
The Two E’s : Environment and Example
When we look at Psalm 23, Jesus our Shepherd leads us to a “place” or  environment where we are able to receive nourishment and refreshing. He also “leads me in the paths of righteousness”. We know that Jesus came to Earth to lead by example, what a righteous life should look like.
What we are wanting to introduce with the Discipleship classes is exactly this. Firstly, to provide you with shepherds that will create an environment for you to grow as leaders, and secondly for you to relate to the example of these shepherds, their lifestyle of servant leadership.

The Godly environment is important because it helps us to see God for who He really is. And the Godly example is powerful because it helps us know that God sees us in the righteousness of Christ.

Shepherds
It may feel awkward looking towards an older or senior person as a buddy or friend which is why we are hoping that you will see the mature and older generation of leaders as shepherds. Not chaperons or bosses or dictators, but shepherds, as described in Psalm 23.
Looking at them as shepherds will help make it easier to look towards older leaders for guidance and, in return, for mature leaders to provide counsel and wisdom to match that.
And what better people to have as shepherds than leaders within the same ministry, with whom you serve with, who understand the Christian lifestyle and discipline required of being in that leadership role.
Therefore what you can expect to see in the weeks and months to come, are classes for the Discipleship modules 1 & 2; this is the environment of shepherding and mentoring. You may also be approached to have a chat, or have a coffee, or to serve together with an older leader for a project; this is the shepherds sharing their life of example with you.
Be in an environment of shepherds and allow examples of shepherds to influence you.
Side note from Cmdr Jim
For those who missed the introduction gathering today, this is an encouragement from Commander Jim in closing.
a) what we hope to see as an outcome from these Discipleship sessions, is for young and old leaders forming friendships and be seen serving together and understanding each other.
b) Paul in the Bible also encourages us in this same manner in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” ~ NIV
c) For this to work, you also have a responsibility to fulfill and that is we expect the commitment from you to come out for these classes and be willing to serve alongside older leaders.

Bone Of My Bone, Flesh Of My Flesh

April 22, 2017

This is a reference to an interesting song that we sang for a friend’s wedding. The link to the original blog post is below. Enjoy.

Bone Of My Bone, Flesh Of My Flesh

(Based on Genesis 2:23)

Chords: I-VI-IV-V

[Verse 1]:
Walking down the Garden one day
God said to Man
You need some help my friend
Let me give you a hand
So He made man sleep
And performed surgery
And when man awoke
He gasped!… and then he spoke
(He said)

[Chorus]:
Bone of my bone
Flesh of my flesh
You shall be called, ‘Wo-oh-man’
You’ll be, bone of my bone
Aa-and flesh of my flesh
You shall be called…
‘Woh-oh-oh-oh-man!’

[Verse 2]:
One-of-the many blessings of God
One-of-His curses too
They will make you happy or sad
It’s up to you
If you feed her well
And you treat her nice
There’ll be har-mo-ny
In this fa-mi-ly

(Then she’ll be)… [Chorus]

[Verse 3]:
Condominium, credit card
Cold ha-ard cash
Big automatic car
Or a Mercedes Benz
If you give her these
She will give you peace
Then you’ll have a say
For just one more day

[Chorus]

This song was written during a very interesting semester at a Bible school that I was attending for a while. I wrote it along with a good friend who is getting married in September this year (2002). I’m sure he’ll tell his wife that this is just an example of the folly of youth. I added the first verse later, as I thought it would be nice to set up the background for the song. It just goes to show that Christians (or at least, some of us) can have a (warped) sense of humour sometimes!

RR Commander’s Fellowship 2017

February 12, 2017
Address to Leaders
God has laid a sense of expectation in my heart, of great things to happen. There are so many great things to happen in RR ministry this year.
What does this greatness look like? It comes in the form of souls saved, lives changed, kids wanting to advance on their own, kids achieving medals, and not just once a year or what, but every meeting.
For this to happen we need good, solid, spirit-filled leaders.
Leaders are the backbone of this ministry. Each one of you plays an important part. Not me or Cmdr Eddy alone, all of us are important.
We cannot see a fruitful ministry happen if we have weak or tired leaders. Royal Rangers is a discipling and mentoring ministry. That means we allow disciples to be apart of our lives; and we share the work of the Lord in our lives with them and impart to them fruit that grows from our lives. How are we to do this if we ourselves have nothing to offer but our tiredness and our overcoming problems? All of us need to stay strong in the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord.
Don’t take circumstances as a sign of God’s favour or calling to serve. If anything at all, I have a dozen things I can complain about my life right now but I decide in my heart that I am a leader, I am a servant, i am anointed, I am ready to serve.
I draw from today’s Sunday message about promises… God has promised strength when we wait on Him. Sometimes we cannot receive because our hands are full of something else. When the Bible talks about receiving, it is often in the context of claiming or redeeming. Like redeeming points for rewards, except that God wants to take our weakness and brokenness in exchange for life and strength.
In closing, I go back to my first statement about great things to happen. For great things to happen in the ministry, this is how the prayer of Royal Ranger leader needs to looks like: “Lord I may be weak, give me strength to serve the kids, Lord I don’t have much, but use what I have to touch the kids.”
Isaiah 40:28-31
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” ~ NKJV

"Who Is Jesus To You?" Christmas Poem

December 25, 2016
Who is Jesus to you?
To Herod, He was a threat.,
But to Mary, the miracle to expect.
The people in Bethlehem, no space or room for birth,
But to the Magi, worth traveling across the earth.
For the rich man, not worth his riches,
But for the shepherds, left their sheep defenceless.
For Pilate, He couldn’t be bothered.
For me, it was worth all the effort.

Blessed Christmas!

A Sadly Joyous Christmas Reflection

December 20, 2016
Just a week before Christmas, once again the world is hit with a number of tragedies involving death and fear. Somehow these things seem to heighten during Christmas time.
All our emotions were on the edge, everything in confusion.
At the home front itself, we think about those whom we have lost from our lives, those whom have gone home to be with the Lord, in the Life Group and in Royal Rangers.
And yet, somehow Christmas is a time we always set aside as a time to celebrate, to be with friends, to re-unite with family members. Why?
Then we are led to think that there are people without family, without friends, and those who will celebrate Christmas alone.
Then we think back and recall the story of Jesus’ birth, the first Christmas, when many infants were executed on the account of wanting to exterminate the Son of God. (Matthew 2:16). A tragic moment amidst a time of hope.
Christmas is both a time for sadness and joy. But the strength behind Christmas; to look forward and move on behind, comes from, I believe, its tradition and its history; His story, the story of hope amongst the tragedy. And more and more it seems, tragedy is no longer momentary but has become a way of life for the world. This world desperately needs a Saviour. It needs Jesus.

Caves In The Bible

December 16, 2016

Shared during the Discovery Rangers 2016 camp, campfire night.

Bible Caves = not good endings

Wherever caves were mentioned in the Bible it was not associated with something good. Often it had something to do with hiding from God, or the enemy or associated with death.

Caves were usually a place where they buried the important people. Like Abraham and Sarah, and Lazarus and Jesus. It was associated with immoral activities like the one where Lot’s daughters got him drunk in order to get him to have sexual relations with him. Then there’s the association with hiding, like David hiding from King Saul, the 5 kings, the children of Israel in Judges 6.

Our caves = not good starts

We ourselves have caves in our own lives which are also not good.

We have caves in us where we hide secret sins. Or sometimes where we hide dreams and hopes and affections that have “died” in us. Or where we try to bury hurt from the past. Like the Bible caves, these are not good for us.

Let’s “ex-cave-ate” our cave (excavate for those who didn’t get it)

In order to get rid of our caves, we first need to inspect the cave that Jesus was in. Why is this important? We need to understand that Jesus conquered the cave that He was set in; He is alive! Jesus was also laid in the cave but like the people who went to see, they saw he was not there and that he had risen.

In John 20, Mary Magdalene saw that the stone had been rolled away, then informed 2 disciples and they ran to see the cave, the Bible says the other disciple (most likely James) reached the cave saw the linen cloths but did not go in. Peter went all the way in and say that the cloth that wrapped Jesus’ head was folded neatly. Then the other disciple went in and saw and the Bible says he saw and also believed.

First altar call: you don’t understand that Jesus is alive. You may be like Mary, you only observe from far that the stone is rolled away, or like James, you just see from outside but you didn’t enter. You need to be like Peter, go and see for yourself that Jesus is no longer in the cave. You only hear about it but have ever believed, or you even always go to church but have never realised for sure, that Jesus is risen.

Let’s EVAC-uate

Secondly, in getting rid of our caves, believe that I’m stating the obvious but, we need to actually come out of our own cave. Like Lazarus, Jesus is calling us to come out of the cave, and be alive. Jesus didn’t come to make bad people good, He came to make dead people live.

Cave spelt backwards is EVAC, a short expression for evacuate. That is evacuating from our caves of secret sins and past hurts. EVAC to the light that is calling us out and to be free and be alive.

2nd altar call: How many of you have secret sins or past hurts hidden in your heart cave? If so,

  1. Understand that God sees those things in your heart, Where can I go from Your Spirit… Even if I make my bed in the depths… Psalm 139:7-8
  2. EVAC those things from your heart by turning to the light, to Jesus who is calling you.
  3. Fill it with God’s Word, psalms 119:11, Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. God’s Word is light in our cave.

Let’s pray.

Bible text from: John 20:1-9, NKJV:

“Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.”

Jesus Learned Obedience

August 5, 2016

“Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered”, Hebrews 5:8

THE CHESS EXAMPLE

It’s like you’re good at a skill, like playing chess. And your father comes along to say, you’ve never played against a super-computer before. And you challenge a super-computer at chess, while at the same time, getting the audience murmur at you, ridicule you, throw stones at you and you manage to beat the computer! Now your chess skill is not just good, but now your skill has been tested and you’re really good!

PIANO EXAMPLE

Or you’re really good at piano. And your father comes along with a difficult piece that you’ve never practiced before, but you play it perfectly, without a single mistake, in front of an audience of thousands and uploaded on Youtube! Now, your piano skill is not just good anymore, now it’s good, tested and everyone can testify to it.

SWIMMING EXAMPLE

Or you’re a very good swimmer. And one day, you become a lifeguard at Sunway Lagoon, or “Bethlehem” Lagoon. And in your job everyday you save people from drowning. And you do your job really well, not one person has drowned since you joined, despite your 12 colleagues doubting you, despite other department heads trying to find ways to get you fired, despite the everyday crowd ridiculing and insulting you for the way you swim. And you ask your father, how do I do this job of saving people? Without allowing all this to affect me? And without making a mistake? And one day you give your life up, whilst  saving everyone in the waterpark. Your life-saving skill is now, not just good, but it has been tested, tried and you came out victorious.

That is exactly what Hebrews 5:8 means when it says, “Jesus learned obedience”.

Jesus, though already perfect and sinless, learned something whilst being in a human body. Every moment of His lifelong learning as a human, especially at the last 3 years of His life on earth, was: Can I endure this temptation to give up? Can I endure suffering in the form of physical and mental torture? from the very creation I love, and still be obedient and do my Father’s will? Without complaint or murmuring. Something never done before by anyone in the universe. And the answer of Hebrews is yes! He could and He did. He learned obedience in what He suffered, He gave His life for it, and He never failed in the process of perfect learning, proven, tested obedience!

Ranger Derby Thoughts on Father’s Day

June 21, 2015

It was the night before race submission and I had finished 2 pinewood derby cars for my two older boys, or at least I thought so, when suddenly something prompted to check the car specification guidelines once more…

And there it was one of the cars was over the width limit by 2mm. Then I thought I’d just give the weight a test just to be sure and to my horror it was also 1/2 an ounce overweight.

How could this be I thought? Then I realised that I might have earlier weighed the car in a manner which gave me a different reading, since the car’s weight was off balance towards one end.

So I started with the alignment and then it was done. Then I thought how about if I chip away some wood from under the car to help it loose some weight and I started on that.

I had just about finished carving a boxed section from the underneath when I lifted it and one of the main decorative accessories dropped off! Ok the more I made modification, the more damages happened in other areas. I fixed the accessory and then realised my hands had accidentally shifted the wheel alignments again.

I thought to myself, it’s getting better late but I have to do it for my son. This was my second son’s car. I thought to myself, how interesting that the car and this son had so much parallel; both gave so many problems in so many areas of behaviour; both didn’t seem to want to cooperate; both had trouble getting to meet a certain specification or standard…

So I was doing all I could to make it work for the car and my son! As fast as possible! If I couldn’t get the car to meet specifications, the car could not enter the race and he’d be disappointed.

It was at that point I realised the frailty and imperfections we have as parents, or rather, I have as a dad. We try so hard to fix our kids. We want them to be good. We want them to be hardworking. And we do all we can for them. “It’s for their own good”, we say. “I just want them to have the best”.

But the moment we get one area of their life fixed, one struggle finally overcome, one difficulty met with success, we come up with another area that, like the car, that either we neglected or mishandled.

I think it is the reality, we focus so much on their studies they neglect church service, or focus too much on church service we neglect family life, or we focus on family life but did not give opportunity for them to make friends, or allow them to make friends and overlooked good behavior. And we have not even put the child’s temperament into the equation. It goes on and on, you get the point.

To achieve balance in all areas in a child’s life is so extremely difficult. Mental-spiritual-social balance, or a work-play-family balance… I think I know one or two parents who do that but if I really scrutinise, I can find some area they’ve overlooked.

Really the only one who can make this come together for a child is God the Father. We try all kinds of techniques to fill the lack in their lives, or to help them overcome certain habits, or to have success in difficulties they face, but the moment we focus on one area, like the car, something else goes on. We are just not “car” professionals. We are just not child professionals. That is when I realised God revealing a truth to me.

That God, in His perfect, loving and divine character has PATIENCE. A holy and pure and perfect PATIENCE.

His patience with us gives Him the perfect timing and ability to deal with every area of our life, every shortcoming, and meet all the “specifications” correctly, without neglecting or overseeing all the other aspects of our life. THAT is something no one on earth can do.

The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. (Psalms 138:8 NKJV)

Blessed Father’s Day.

~~~
Shortened Version
Working on the Derby car has thought me a lesson. When I was working to perfect one area of the car I may have neglected or accidentally damaged another part.
For example, while trying to chip away the wood I made the decoration drop off. Or while I was trying to glue the axle I accidentally glued the wheel as well. Or while I was adding glue and paint, I didn’t realise that I was adding weight to the car to make it overweight.
I think this reflects our parenting as human fathers. The moment we try to perfect one area of our child’s life, we either neglect, or worse, damage another area of our child’s life.
We focus so much on their studies that we neglect their spiritual life. We focus too much on correcting behaviour we forget to love them. We try to fill a certain lack in their lives or to overcome a habit, and we neglect their overall wellbeing. Just as we are not “car” professionals, we just are not child professionals.
That is when I realised God revealing a truth to me. Really the only one who can make this all come together for a child is God the Father. That God, in His loving character has a type of PATIENCE that is perfect PATIENCE.
His patience with us gives Him the perfect timing and ability to deal with every area of our life, every shortcoming, and meet all the “specifications” correctly, without neglecting or overseeing all the other aspects of our life. THAT is something no one on earth can do.
The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. (Psalms 138:8 NKJV)
Blessed Father’s Day.
The LORD will work out his plans for my life— for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. (Psalms 138:8 NLT)
